Port Antonio, Mandeville and the South Coast offer visitors an alternative to the bigger tourist destinations of Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. These areas have their own charm and distinct beauty, waiting to be discovered by the savvy traveler. Once Errol Flynn settled in Port Antonio after seeking refuge with his yacht, the rich and famous began to flock here. The beautiful landscape can be seen in many films and fashion ads, but it's even more glorious when it's seen firsthand. Visit Blue Lagoon (of the same-named movie), for swimming, or relaxing by the bar and restaurant. A trip to the ruins of the Folly, once a mansion built of concrete and seawater, and you'll see how grand this Romanesque structure must have been. Natural attractions such as the Athenry Gardens, Nonsuch Caves and Rio Grande River are all worth a visit, as is Navy Island. Take the ferry out to visit the island once owned by Errol Flynn where he hosted his lively guests. It's a great place to picnic and muse about the way things must have been back then. Mandeville is a great place to spend a long weekend, with a cooler climate, British heritage, scenic gardens and a 19th century church and courthouse. Mandeville offers hiking or horseback riding, garden tours, or you can birdwatch at Marshall's Pen - a 300-acre cattle farm, complete with great house, gardens and a bird sanctuary. Not far from Mandeville, the South Coast offers a curative dip in the Milk River Bath, a glimpse of crocodiles or manatee at Long Bay Morass. Drive down Bamboo Avenue framed by bamboo groves, and stop for a visit to Appleton Estate's rum distillery. Wherever you choose to explore, these alternative destinations won't disappoint you.
